Excerpt from “Sakamoto and the Monks of Hieizan”

Kyoto, from where you are.

Virtually travel to the ancient capital of Japan and explore landmarks far off the beaten path, going deep into parts of Kyoto that very few get to see. Beyond just viewing sites of cultural significance, you will hear fascinating stories and insights into the history, design elements, and symbolism of what surrounds us.

Perfect for gatherings of friends or family, corporate team-building events, and educational groups- this is a totally new way to experience culture.

Calming, Interactive and Immersive.

Expert live commentary paired with artistically created videos, diagrams, photos, and audio will be shared to create richly layered explorations of some of Kyoto’s hidden gems. As our journey is very much meant to be interactive, there will be plenty of opportunities for Q&A and discussion. Traveling though time and space, you will experience the elegant but simple, mysterious but inviting, highly charged but tranquil nature of Kyoto.

Sakamoto and the Monks of Hieizan (NEW RELEASE)

To the east of Kyoto is Sakamoto- a medieval town that has very much retained the historic and agricultural landscape reminiscent of years past. Sakamoto is where monks would come down from Mt. Hiei to rest and recharge in-between long bouts of very intense spiritual training. In this online experience we will immerse ourselves in this ancient town and examine the training that pushes these monks, often known as the “Marathon Monks”, to the brink of death.

Originating in the middle 700’s, this temple had fallen on hard times after WWII. In an effort to restore it, an ambitious art project was initiated that brought regular people from all over Japan together to carve their own rakan, or followers of the Buddha, out of stone.
