While doing research for an experience I have recently began hosting, I discovered a place that I never knew existed and is such a surprising delight, Nobotoke-an. Located in the hills of Rakuhoku, on the edge northeast of the city in a small farming suburb, this complex of tea houses has existed for over 200 years.

The refuge of a famous scholar of the tea ceremony and the retreat of a novelist from the Edo period, Nobotoke-an was also the home of a famous politician who lived here between the Meiji and Showa Periods.

It is only open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, so if you are interested to visit there you need to plan accordingly. Visitors can enjoy strolling through the garden and enjoy a bowl of matcha with a small traditional snack. An excellent way to spend time away from the crowds and feel the true nature of Kyoto.
